This is a comprehensive history
of Butler County, Missouri, as well as a cross-sectional glimpse of small
town and rural Americana from 1849 to 1999. The main objective of its
publication is to provide a comprehensive source book of information to
students, genealogists, and to anyone else who has an interest in the
history of Butler County or rural life in the Midwest in general.
From primary and secondary
sources, including the files of local newspapers, the reader is taken
on a dramatic journey from pre-Columbian times to modern day era: prehistory;
the New Madrid earthquake; early exploration and settlement; the Civil
War; railroads, steamboats and highways; the Great Depression; War times;
weather and natural disasters; Black history; religion; public services;
sickness and health; law and order; and many other sections.
Though focused on
Butler County, this book will be of interest to readers nationwide as
the county becomes a microcosm of Americana with events and developments
described in the perspective of the national scene.
Containing thousands
of names, it is also of great interest to genealogists.
